Volume I: From Waterloo to Meridian A funny time-travel adventure story about pirates, Vikings, an enormous squid, and the secret organization that can change history.   In this rather silly time-travel adventure, Dhlara and Jylling are two ordinary young people living in the modern day, until the Duke of Wellington, a 19th century British general with a fondness for shouting, steps into their lives. He transports (or abducts, depending on who you ask) them to the Ministries of Time, a secret group of organizations that exist at the edge of time which have control over absolutely everything that has ever happened. There, he gives them grave news: Napoleon Bonaparte has gone and ruined a perfectly good history of the world by traveling back in time with a monstrously huge squid that can walk on land. Through utilizing such a dastardly stratagem, Napoleon has won the Battle of Waterloo, and is building upon that victory to rule the entire world. Dhlara and Jylling, says the Duke of Wellington, must stop Napoleon to save all of history and time itself! But soon they meet Melvin the “previously embodied head,” as he prefers to call himself, and they discover that things will only get even more strange.

Passionate, free-spirited Deborah has finally found peace and a fulfilling relationship in her adopted city of Granada – but when she is seriously injured in the Madrid train bombings of 2004, it is her sister Alice who is forced to face the consequences of a deception they have maintained for ten years. At Deborah’s home in Granada, Alice waits, ever more fearful. Will her sister live or die? And how long should she stay when each day brings the risk of what she most dreads, a confrontation with Deborah’s Moroccan ex-lover, Hassan? At stake is all she holds dear… Secrets of the Pomegranate explores, with compassion, sensitivity and – despite the tragic events – humour, the complicated ties between sisters, between mothers and sons and between lovers, set against a background of cultural difference and prejudices rooted in Granada’s long history of Muslim-Christian struggles for power.

This is a coming-of-age novel set in the 1950s and 60s in Lancashire. Its point-of-view protagonist is Ellen, a working class girl who becomes friends with middle class Erica when she goes to the convent school in the neighbouring town. Focussing on both Ellen’s home life and her school life (which she tries to keep separate), the novel explores the gains and the losses that education and religion provide over the course of her school years.   Thematically, it’s a novel about friendship, love, loss, and death. Social class is also dealt with lightly. There are dark passages in the novel, but also much humour. Each chapter is a month of the year – beginning with September to reflect the structure of the school year. This framework also allows for treatment of the seasons and the liturgical year. The months are sequential but the years are not. Between September 1959 and September 1966 the years go back and forth (with some flashbacks to earlier years).
