Author’s name: PJ Sharon
Who is your greatest writing influence? Why?:
I love books by such great story tellers as Diana Gabaldon and Barbara Kingsolver. They both have a unique gift for beautiful prose and the skilled use of language that brings characters to life and emotions surging to the surface on every page. This is what every writer aspires to achieve.
Why is independent publishing important to you? :
I like the freedom and control Independent publishing offers. I’m a bit of a control freak so having the final say over cover art, editing, production schedules, and pricing are factors I would be hard pressed to give up now that I’ve done all the hard work of learning about the industry ins and outs.
Do you have any strange writing habits? What are they? can you write without them?:
I do have a routine I try to stick to. Business items come first, such as email and social media updates over a cup of tea in the morning. Then it’s workout time and breakfast before I can finally sit down to focus on writing. I seem to have difficulty switching hats from business mode to creative mode, however, and it often requires that I take a long hot shower or a walk in the woods before the muse is willing to surface. Other than that, i don’t think I have any strange habits per se. Does cracking my knuckles and repeating the mantra, “I am an excellent writer…I am a bestselling author,” count?
What subjects do you find it hard to write about? Why?:
Abuse of any kind is difficult. If I have to put myself in the mindset of someone who is being victimized, it can take me some time to pull my head out that place. While i was writing SAVAGE CINDERELLA, the story of a girl who was kidnapped and abused as a child, I had a bout of nightmares and depression that took me by surprise. I finally got past it when my character found her happy ending.
Do you have other creative outlets or skills? What are they?:
Being a perpetual student, I’m constantly exploring new avenues of self-expression. I sing (my book trailer for PIECES of LOVE features a song I wrote and recorded). I love to garden, kayak, and spend time with my new grand daughter. In my day job, I’m a massage therapist, personal trainer, and yoga instructor. I’ve taught figure skating and done martial arts over the years as well. Most recently, I’ve become a gun enthusiast and my husband and I spend a considerable amount of time at the shooting range–a hobby that came about after researching weapons for my dystopian novels. My general philosophy is to live everyday to the fullest and experience as much of life as possible while I’m here for this finite time. People often ask me if there’s anything I don’t do. I tell them, I’m a terrible golfer, I don’t bowl, and I’m dangerous with darts and horseshoes. otherwise, I’m game for just about anything. Someday when I slow down, I may try my hand at quilting or learn to paint.
